A note on the numbers. The selected nominal annual return is converted to an equivalent monthly rate for the selected compounding frequency. Optional monthly contributions are added at the end of each month through the projection period. One-time contributions are added to the current projected balance when saved and grow from that point onward. Choosing a what-if rate applies it to your whole plan without restarting the clock; recalculating starts a new plan and clears one-time contributions. “In today’s dollars” divides each value by an assumed 2.5% yearly inflation rate, which is not a forecast. The live display interpolates between monthly points so it updates every second; that interpolation is a visualization, not actual investment earnings. Preview moves one projected year every five seconds until you go back to real time. A running clock includes time while the app is closed and catches up when reopened in this browser; pauses exclude that time. Your applied plan and clock timing are saved securely on the server and linked by a browser cookie. Clearing cookies or changing browsers starts a separate clock. Reset deletes the saved plan. Actual returns fluctuate and taxes, fees, and contribution timing affect results. Interest per second is an approximate rate at the projected balance.
